Sunglasses must comply with Consumer Good (Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles) Safety Standard 2017
THIS IS A MANDATORY STANDARD
to help protect consumers from harmful ultraviolet radiation and enable selection of appropriate glasses.
IT IS ILLEGAL TO SUPPLY SUNGLASSES THAT DO NOT COMPLY WITH THE MANDATORY STANDARD!
Step 1: What sunglasses must be checked?
What products must comply?
Sunglasses (adult and child)
Fashion spectacles with tinted lenses
Clip-on sunglass lenses
One-piece visors
Rimless sunshields
What products do not have to comply?
Eye protectors for sport
Prescription and readymade spectacles
Eyewear for protection against radiation in solaria
Eyewear for protection against radiation in solaria
Sunglasses for use as toys and clearly and legibly labelled as toys
Safety glasses / goggles for protection against optical radiation other than from the sun
Step 2: Check the labelling
The following information must appear on (a) the frame or (b) removable label attached to the sunglasses or (c) the packaging or (d) any combination of these means:
identification of model
name and address of manufacturer or supplier
Type of filter if photochromic and / or polarizing
“Not for direct observation of the sun”
“Not for protection against artificial light sources, e.g. solaria”
“Not for use as eye protection against mechanical impact hazards”
the category and the following table or the row corresponding to the category

Step 3: Obtain test report(s)
Before supplying sunglasses a test report must be obtained that:
was provided by an independent accredited testing facility;
states the date(s) the tests were conducted;
identifies the identical product, being the same product to be supplied; and
confirms the sunglasses comply with AS/NZS 1067.1:2016 Eye and face protection - sunglasses and fashion spectacles as specified by the Mandatory Standard.
Step 4: Supplier to complete this step (send this form to the supplier)
